Hi There...I welcome any suggestions or corrections needed on this site. I am still in great need of images and would appreciate any help. Thanks for your patience. Snow Please sign my guestbook in the menu on the right and let me know what you think of the site. It is our responsibility, as purchasers of this species, to ensure the survival of this and other species in the wild. Please ask questions of the seller to insure that your tubers or live plants were not snatched from the ground with no further thought for their survival. If the seller cares only how much money he/she is making and offers no cultivation tips or history of the Amorphophallus you are purchasing, please look elsewhere. There are plenty of reputable people that will sell you your plant/tuber with instructions on care and the story of where the plant came from. I urge all of you to join the International Aroid Society. If you are already a member, don't forget to renew your membership each December. I forgot this year until someone reminded me. Support the great work they have all done to bring us the most informative website in the world of Aroids. Thank you for your interest in Amorphophallus for Beginners. First off, the information you find on this site does not take the place of the valuable info on the International Aroid Society ( IAS ) site or Aroideana #19 , which is one issue in a series of many books offered by the IAS. This particular issue deals with only the species Amorphophallus and contains some very useful information. This site is a simple tool used to explain some the contents of the IAS site and Aroideana #19. There are many new collectors (including myself) who do not understand the language used there. Because I wanted to know exactly what it was I was reading, I was constantly researching each word I didn't understand. Hopefully, this site will be a little bit of a shortcut for others. I am simply making available an easier-to-understand version with some added personal experiences from myself and others. Knowledge of growing techniques, soil, dormancy and other important facts will help to ensure survival of the species ex-situ and in-situ. Destruction of these habitats is threatening the future of this amazing species, and knowledge is the cure. Remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question. Ask away! I don't pretend to have a title after my name (Phd. or Md.). I have no formal schooling regarding the species. To some I am just an "acquirer" and not a collector. To them, I refer to Webster's Dictionary.
To me, a collector is someone that has a great passion for what it is they collect. I have never been to Borneo and seen Amorphophallus in-situ . I have never had the great pleasure of pulling one from the earth to add to my collection for research. I do have the passion and commitment it takes to grow this species successfully. I will make mistakes, as all of us do, but I won't let anyone tell me that because I lack the title, I shouldn't call myself a collector. One day I will visit the places where Amorphophallus grow. This is my dream and my life has been changed by these strange plants. Because I have an extreme interest in something for the first time in my life, I am excited to learn. The information contained in this site is not to be considered "The Only Answer". These are mere suggestions that may or may not work for you. Personal experience is the only way to figure out what works best for you and your species. Without the help of the following people, this site wouldn't have been possible. All images contained herein are copyrighted, and proper consent for use should be granted by the owner of the images. Please accept the following as my complete and honest gratitude for the help I was given in the production of this site. Thanks to all of you for being there for me. When I asked you all of my very boring, endless questions, you answered with the patience of kindergarten teachers. You gave me the courage to pursue my passion and the knowledge that there are some very kind and loving people in the world that I had no idea existed before this project. Thanks to all of you for being there. To those of you who refused my request for help, or refused to acknowledge my existence, you made me want to complete this project and made me more determined to do a better job. I learned from all you have written, and I appreciate all the hard work you did to bring us the information we now have on this species. Thank you for your dedication and the dedication you inspired in me. Thanks to the following people who were there for me: I want to thank cranky Wilbert Hetterscheid for not answering my many emails. Although I did hear from you a few times, you forced me to research this species and to not expect easy answers. Because of your hard work and continued research, all of us know what we know now. Christian Perkins of AlterNative Solutions...You rock! My good friend...thanks for the images and helpful info. Without your encouragement I wouldn't have purchased my first Amorph. Your friendship has shown me there are still good things in this world. We will all miss Billy and his wonderful sense of humor. You are so brave! Troy Davis ....Troy was kind enough to allow me to use some of the best images there are and I thank him for that. He is no longer in the Aroid business. Ron Kaufmann....Had the patience of six kindergarten teachers! Thanks for accepting me and allowing me use of images. Pete Boyce of Malaysiana Tropicals...for educating me, for your patience, and use of images. Enid Offolter of Natural Selections Exotics... for allowing me use of her images and answering my questions. Thomas Croat...for having a great sense of humor and allowing use of images. Mary Sizemore.... for being there to answer my many questions. John Banta...for helping me with questions and for use of images. Ken Mosher of DragoCactoid...for use of images. Hans Vissers...for sending me your wonderful images all the way from Europe! Bryan Lampl.. Amorph Group .for allowing use of images and for being fun to hang out with.
